The Most Haunted House in Australia: Monte Cristo Homestead

Although it's a few hours' drive from the city in Junee, no list of haunted houses in Australia is complete without Monte Cristo Homestead.

• The reputation: Often called the most haunted house in Australia, this Victorian manor has a dark history involving tragic accidents, a "hidden" child, and a presence many claim is still protective of the property.

• The tragedy: The story goes that the house is tied to the drowning of a young boy and the later death of a student when it was used as a school.
• The energy: Paranormal investigators say they've recorded numerous EVPs (electronic voice phenomena) here, and the upper floor is said to feel so oppressive that some people refuse to enter the bedrooms alone.
• Can you visit? Studley Park is privately owned. It has hosted occasional tours and events in the past, so check for an official tour or event; otherwise, don't enter the grounds.
