On the outskirts of Sydney in Narellan, near Camden, Studley Park House is a grand Victorian mansion that looks like it was designed for a ghost story. Built in 1888–89 for businessman William Charles Payne (locals called it "Payne's Folly"), it has been a private home, a school and a wartime army training school, and each era seems to have left behind spirits that won't move on. The Legend of the Waiting Woman
The most famous apparition at Studley Park is the "Woman in the Tower". Visitors and workers have reported a pale figure standing in the top-floor tower window, staring out toward the driveway.
The story: local legend says she was a grieving woman who spent her final years waiting for a loved one to come home from war. Even in death she stays at her post, her silhouette visible to anyone who looks up at the tower in the blue hour.
The Ghostly Schoolboys
When the house was Camden Grammar School (from 1902 to 1933), legend has it that two young boys died there in different circumstances.
- The playful spirit: one boy reportedly drowned in a nearby dam. Staff have often reported small running footsteps in the upstairs hallways and the feeling of a cold hand grabbing at their clothes.
- The sickroom: the second boy is said to have died of illness in the house. His room is one of the most active spots in the building, with reports of bedsheets being tugged and objects moving on their own.
Can You Visit Studley Park House?
Studley Park House is a privately owned, State Heritage-listed house on Camden Valley Way, Narellan, beside the Camden Lakeside golf course. It's often closed for private events, so you'll usually only see the exterior and the "haunted tower" from the public areas around it.
- Going inside: the house only opens on occasional official open days, tours or events. Check for an official event before you go, and don't enter the house or private grounds outside of one.
