A Disappearance and a Forgery
In June 1826, local farmer and ex-convict Frederick Fisher vanished. His neighbour, George Worrall, claimed Fred had gone back to England to dodge a forgery charge, leaving Worrall in charge of his farm and belongings.
For four months the town believed him, until the spirits decided otherwise.
The Sighting at the Bridge
The turning point came on a dark night in October 1826.
The Witness
A respected local farmer named John Farley staggered into a hotel in sheer terror.
The Apparition
Farley said he'd seen the ghost of Fred Fisher sitting on the rail of a bridge. The ghost didn't speak. It simply pointed a pale, trembling hand toward a nearby paddock, then faded into the mist.
The Discovery
Acting on Farley's story, police and Aboriginal trackers searched the area and found Fisher's remains in a shallow grave, right where the ghost had pointed.
The Legacy of Fred Fisher
George Worrall was hanged for the murder, but Fred Fisher never really left Campbelltown.
The Festival
Every November, the town celebrates the Festival of Fisher's Ghost.
