Monte Cristo Homestead: A Date with Australia's Most Haunted House

Christopher Crawley built the house in 1885, and since the Crawley family moved in, it has been the scene of a run of tragic and unexplained events that seem to have left their mark on the place.
The Legend of Mrs Crawley
Monte Cristo's most famous resident is Elizabeth Crawley. After her husband Christopher died in 1910, Elizabeth reportedly left the house only twice in the next 23 years. Visitors and investigators have often reported seeing a silver-haired woman in a lace dress.
- The icy touch: many describe a sudden, bone-chilling drop in temperature when her presence is near.
- The scent of lavender: some claim to smell her perfume just before an apparition appears.
Is Monte Cristo Haunted? The Tragedies Behind the Stories
The house's dark history isn't limited to one ghost. Over the years, the property has seen:
- The stairs: a young maid reportedly fell to her death from the balcony, and many say the spot where she landed stays unnaturally cold.
- The stables: a stable boy is said to have died in a fire, and his cries are still said to be heard near the old barn.
- The caretaker: in the 1960s a caretaker was killed on the porch, a spot that became a focus for reported paranormal activity.
Can You Visit Monte Cristo Homestead?
Not at the moment. Monte Cristo is in Junee, about 4.5 hours from Sydney, and for decades it ran ghost tours and overnight stays. It closed to the public after the death of owner Olive Ryan in late 2024, the ghost tours have stopped, and the house has since been listed for sale.
- It's private property. Please don't enter the grounds or try to visit at night. If official tours ever resume, that's the only way in, so check the current status before you plan a trip.
- Be respectful. These stories are about real families and servants whose lives and deaths shaped the house.
