Pori Pori Waterhole – Bay of Plenty, New Zealand

Pori Pori Waterhole deep swimming basin on the Wairoa River Bay of Plenty New Zealand

Pori Pori Waterhole – Bay of Plenty, New Zealand

Hidden inland from Tauranga in the folds of the Kaimai foothills, Pori Pori Waterhole sits quietly along the Wairoa River. Here, cool emerald water gathers beneath small cascading falls and smooth volcanic rock shelves, forming one of the most inviting freshwater swimming holes in the Bay of Plenty.

The setting feels raw and natural. Moss clings to boulders, ferns spill down the riverbanks, and the water glides through sculpted channels before dropping gently into a calm basin. Sunlight filters through tall native trees, illuminating clear pools where you can see rounded stones resting beneath the surface.

Despite being only a short drive from the city, Pori Pori feels secluded — a place where the river slows, the forest thickens, and the outside world fades behind the sound of flowing water. For more Bay of Plenty swimming, explore McLaren Falls Park or visit Kaiate Falls.
