McLaren Falls Park – Tauranga, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand

McLaren Falls Park – Tauranga, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand

Spread across rolling farmland and forested valleys just outside Tauranga, McLaren Falls Park feels wide, open, and unexpectedly peaceful. At its heart lies Lake McLaren — a long, calm body of freshwater framed by grassy picnic areas, native bush, and gentle hills.

Unlike narrow gorge waterfalls, the atmosphere here is expansive. In summer, the lake reflects blue sky and drifting clouds, and warm air settles over the water's edge. Kayaks drift quietly across the surface, families set up beneath shady trees, and swimmers slip into clear shallows near the shoreline.

Beyond the lake, the Wairoa River tumbles through rock channels at the lower falls, where water spills into smaller pools beneath moss-covered banks. It's a place where you can choose your pace — energetic and social near the main lawns, or calm and secluded along forest tracks.
