The Pass, Byron Bay: Swimming, Surf & Fisherman's Lookout
The Pass is Byron Bay's most famous surf break: a curve of sand between Clarkes Beach and Wategos where long right-handers peel around the point and longboarders line up from dawn. Above it, a timber staircase climbs to Fisherman's Lookout, with views across the whole bay.

It's not just for surfers. On calm mornings the water goes glassy and still, perfect for a swim, a snorkel or a paddle with the dolphins cruising past. It's one of the Byron beaches we feature in Swim New South Wales.

Swimming at The Pass
The Pass sits in the sheltered corner of the bay, which is what gives it those long, clean waves. That shelter also means flat, clear water on calm days, especially in the morning before the wind picks up. That's the time to swim, float or snorkel just off the sand.
As the day goes on, light winds arrive, the surf crowd builds and the whole scene gets busier and more colourful. If you're swimming, stay out of the way of the lineup: this is a crowded break and boards move fast.
Summer brings warm, clear water and plenty of people. Climb the wooden stairs to Fisherman's Lookout for a view over Cape Byron and out to Julian Rocks, where dolphins often cruise beyond the break and humpback whales breach in the distance during the migration season.
Pandanus trees and native bush back the beach, and there's a raw, tidal rhythm to the place: calm and reflective in the morning, buzzing by the afternoon.
How to Get to The Pass
On foot or by bike: it's an easy 15 to 20 minute walk from Main Beach via Clarkes Beach, along the sand or the path. It's also a scenic ride from town, with bike racks near the car park and lookout.
By car: from the town centre, head east on Lighthouse Road, turn left onto Massinger Street and continue onto Brooke Drive, following signs to The Pass car park. It's small, paid and patrolled, and fills early, especially in summer.
By public transport: local buses don't stop at The Pass, so walk or cycle from town.
Know Before You Go

- Give dolphins space, and take all rubbish with you.
- The lookout stairs are steep, so take care, especially when they're wet.
