The Crescent Rockpool, Crescent Head: Back Beach Walk & Tides
The Crescent Rockpool is a natural pool of bright turquoise water sitting on a raised rock shelf beneath a cliff, a short drive and a beach walk from Crescent Head on the Mid North Coast. From the sand of Back Beach you'd never know it was there. You only see it when you're standing right beside it.

It has a soft sandy bottom, room to swim its length and shallows to stand in, and the rock walls around it block the wind and hold the afternoon sun. Getting there takes a beach walk and a proper scramble, which is half the fun. It's one of the most rewarding rock pools in Swim New South Wales.

Swimming at The Crescent Rockpool
The pool is big enough for a few strokes end to end, and about half of it is shallow enough to stand. On a good day it's calm, clear and warm, more lagoon than ocean pool.
But it's still at the mercy of the sea. Although it sits above the waterline, waves can wash over the shelf and into the pool in bigger swell. Only go within a couple of hours of low tide and when the swell forecast is slight. If waves are reaching the shelf when you arrive, turn around. Lower yourself in rather than jumping or diving, as the floor is uneven.
There are no bins out here, and anything left on the rock shelf ends up in the ocean, so take everything home. Use reef-safe sunscreen and put it on well before you swim to keep the water clean.

How to Get to The Crescent Rockpool
Drive about five minutes south of the Crescent Head township to the Back Beach access car park. The last stretch of road to Back Beach is unsealed, so take it slowly. From the car park, walk about 600 metres north along the sand, then about 250 metres of rock hopping and scrambling around the headland. There's no formal path: expect craggy rock spines, pebbly gaps and spots where you'll need your hands for balance. Allow 2 to 3 hours for the whole outing.
Know Before You Go
