Crystal Shower Falls – A Rainforest Classic on Waterfall Way

Crystal Shower Falls: A Rainforest Classic on Waterfall Way
In the heart of Dorrigo National Park, Crystal Shower Falls is one of the most famous waterfalls on the Waterfall Way. Surrounded by ancient Gondwana rainforest, the falls spill into a fern-filled gully, making this one of the most magical short walks in New South Wales. For more Dorrigo waterfalls, see Dangar Falls or Red Cedar Falls.

Unlike most waterfalls in the region, Crystal Shower Falls lets you walk behind the waterfall. A short side track leads into a rocky cavern behind the cascade, where you can look through the veil of falling water into the valley beyond. It's a rare and unforgettable perspective.
You'll find Crystal Shower Falls in Swim New South Wales, our guide to the state's most stunning wild water spots, from rainforest cascades to ocean baths.
A Walk Through Ancient Gondwana Rainforest
The walk to Crystal Shower Falls is just as memorable as the destination. The falls are also part of the longer Wonga Walk loop, a lush trail that winds beneath towering coachwoods, strangler figs and moss-covered trunks.
Expect:
- Cool, shaded rainforest paths
- Elevated boardwalks overlooking deep gullies
- Birdlife including lyrebirds, robins and green catbirds
- Ferns and palms that feel almost prehistoric
The first glimpse of the waterfall appears through a curtain of trees: a thin white ribbon tumbling into a deep green amphitheatre. Moments later, the side track delivers you inside the cavern, where you can stand right behind the falls and watch the water stream past in sheets of white.

The Crystal Shower Falls Suspension Bridge
One of the standout features of the walk is the suspension bridge that crosses the valley in front of the waterfall. From here you get a stunning front-on view of the falls dropping into the pool below, perfect for photos, with rainforest sweeping out on both sides.
The bridge sways gently as you cross, which only adds to the experience.

Can You Swim at Crystal Shower Falls?
We don't rate Crystal Shower Falls as a swimming waterfall. The pool at its base is shallow and rocky, and the rocks around the falls are slippery, so it's best enjoyed from the bridge or from inside the cavern.
For a proper swim nearby, head to Dangar Falls, which has a big, deep pool just outside Dorrigo.
