Dangar Falls Guide: Swimming at Dorrigo’s Most Iconic Waterfall

Dangar Falls: The Jewel of the Waterfall Way in Dorrigo

If you are driving the iconic Waterfall Way between Coffs Harbour and Armidale, Dangar Falls is the undisputed star of the show. While the nearby Dorrigo National Park is famous for its Skywalk, Dangar Falls is where you go to actually get in the water.

Located just 2km from the center of Dorrigo township, this 30-metre waterfall plunges into a massive, deep swimming hole. Surrounded by ancient basalt rock formations and lush green hills, it feels like a scene from a prehistoric movie set. For more stunning NSW waterfalls, explore Crystal Shower Falls and Red Cedar Falls, both nearby on the Waterfall Way.

How to Get to Dangar Falls (Dorrigo)

Access is incredibly easy, making it a perfect stop for road trippers and families.

  1. The Drive: From Dorrigo town center, head north on Coramba Road. You'll see the signs for Dangar Falls on your right within 2 minutes.

  2. Parking: There is a large, sealed car park with excellent facilities, including a playground, picnic shelters, and toilets.

  3. The Trail: There is an accessible lookout right at the car park, but the real magic is at the bottom. Follow the Dangar Falls walk—a winding, paved path that leads you through the trees to the riverbank.

The Swimming Experience

The pool at the base of the falls is enormous, offering plenty of space even on busy summer days.

  • The Shoreline: The edge of the water is quite rocky and can be slippery. We recommend wearing water shoes or sturdy sandals to make getting in and out of the water easier.

  • The Depth: The pool is very deep in the center. It's a fantastic place for a proper long-distance swim, but keep an eye on younger children near the edges.

  • Basalt Columns: Take a moment to look at the rock walls. These are vertical basalt columns formed by ancient volcanic activity, giving the swimming hole a rugged, cathedral-like feel.

Expert Tips for a Better Visit

  • The Secret Labyrinth: Look for the stone labyrinth made by locals near the viewing platform—it's a quirky touch perfect for a quiet moment.

  • The "Mist" Factor: On windy days, the spray from the falls can be intense. Keep your camera gear in a dry bag until you're ready to shoot!

  • Waterfall Way Itinerary: After your swim, drive 5 minutes to the Dorrigo Rainforest Centre to walk the Skywalk for a bird's-eye view of the entire valley you just hiked into. You can also explore Killen Falls further north, or discover more NSW swimming spots in our complete guide.
