Rainbow Falls – Kerikeri, Northland

Rainbow Falls waterfall cascading into a deep jade pool in Kerikeri Northland New Zealand

Did you know?

Rainbow Falls is named for the shimmering arcs of colour that appear in the mist when sunlight hits the cascade — a phenomenon so consistent locals call it "the rainbow that never leaves." The waterfall's Māori name, Waianiwaniwa, translates to "Waters of the Rainbow."

About Rainbow Falls

Just minutes from the town of Kerikeri in Northland, Rainbow Falls (Waianiwaniwa) is a powerful 27-metre single-drop waterfall plunging into a deep, jade-green pool framed by dark basalt cliffs and native bush. Though easily accessible, the falls retain a wild, atmospheric beauty — mist drifting through the forest canopy and the constant roar of water echoing through the gorge.

The Kerikeri River Track winds gently through regenerating forest, past nikau palms, ponga ferns, and mossy rock walls before opening suddenly to reveal the full height of the waterfall. From the main viewing platform, water spills in a wide white curtain over the cliff face, creating shifting rainbows in the spray when sunlight strikes the mist.

Below the falls, a faint trail leads to the river's edge where swimmers gather in summer to cool off in the calmer shallows downstream. The pool beneath the waterfall is deep and powerful, while quieter sections along the river offer peaceful places to wade or relax.
