Putāruru Blue Spring – Waikato

Putāruru Blue Spring – New Zealand’s Clearest Water

Hidden in the rolling countryside of the Waikato, Putāruru Blue Spring is one of the purest and most visually striking freshwater sources in the world. The water here is filtered naturally through underground aquifers for over a century before emerging crystal-clear and glowing in shades of electric turquoise. So pure, in fact, that the spring supplies a large portion of New Zealand’s bottled water.

Walking beside the Waihou River toward the spring feels surreal — every pebble, ripple, and strand of waterweed visible beneath the surface. The colour shifts constantly depending on the light, from icy blue to deep emerald, giving the spring an almost unreal glow.

This remarkable location is featured in Swim New Zealand, our guide to the country’s most breathtaking natural swimming and freshwater destinations.

Track Overview – Waihou River Walkway

There are two main ways to experience Putāruru Blue Spring:

Leslie Road Entrance (Short Walk – Best for Swimming)

- Easy access to viewing platforms and the permitted swimming area

- Short walk (~10–15 minutes to spring viewing section)

- Calm river stretch ideal for a quick dip

Whites Road Entrance (Full Walk – Scenic Route)

- Approx 4.7 km one way

- Walk follows the Waihou River through farmland, native bush, and wooden bridges

- Passes open meadow sections and shaded forest

- Ends at the main Blue Spring viewing deck

The path is mostly flat and well-maintained, making it suitable for most fitness levels.

Important – Swimming Restrictions

Swimming is not permitted at the main Blue Spring itself to protect its fragile ecosystem. However, a designated swimming section downstream near the Leslie Road entrance allows visitors to safely experience the same crystal-clear spring water.

The water temperature remains extremely cold year-round (around 11°C), so ease in slowly to avoid cold shock.
