Otumuheke Stream Hot Pools – Taupō, Waikato, New Zealand

Otumuheke Stream is where geothermal heat meets river cool — a natural hot spring flowing into the deep green Waikato River just north of Taupō. Steam rises gently from small rock pools while, only metres away, New Zealand's longest river glides past in powerful silence.

Warm mineral water spills over rock ledges into a series of natural soaking pools. Each basin varies slightly in temperature — hotter near the top where the geothermal flow emerges, cooler as it blends with the river. The result is a perfectly adjustable soak, shaped entirely by nature.

Framed by bush-covered riverbanks and open sky, the pools feel both social and serene. Families wade between rock edges, travellers stretch out in the shallows, and on still mornings, steam drifts across the water in soft white ribbons.
