Lake Ōkāreka – Rotorua, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand

Lake Ōkāreka – Rotorua, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand
Just ten minutes from central Rotorua, Lake Ōkāreka feels peaceful and residential — a quiet volcanic lake edged by grassy reserves, sandy shoreline, and forested hills. On still mornings, the lake becomes a mirror, reflecting the slopes of the Lake Tikitapu Scenic Reserve rising behind it.
The water here is famously clear. Close to shore, it's shallow and gently sloping, making it ideal for relaxed wading and family swimming. Further out, the lake deepens into cool blue tones, perfect for confident swimmers seeking longer stretches.
Unlike more dramatic geothermal swims, Ōkāreka is calm and classic — long summer afternoons, paddleboards drifting quietly, picnics beneath lakeside trees, and children jumping from the public jetty into refreshing freshwater. For a contrasting geothermal experience, visit nearby Kerosene Creek, or explore the turquoise waters of Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake).
