The History Behind the Hauntings
The Quarantine Station was a place of high anxiety and deep sorrow. Passengers suspected of carrying smallpox, bubonic plague or Spanish flu were taken off their ships and kept in isolation. The "Gravedigger" is one of the most frequently reported apparitions: a tall, dark figure often seen wandering near the old burial sites.
Is Q Station Haunted? The Stories
- The Hospital: visitors often report the smell of antiseptic and the sound of phantom footsteps in the old hospital wards.
- The Shower Block: a place of real trauma for people being "disinfected" on arrival. Many report sudden temperature drops and the feeling of being watched.
- The Dining Hall: late-night staff have reported figures in period clothing sitting at the tables, only for them to vanish when approached.
How to Visit Q Station
The grounds are free to explore by day, but many of the buildings can only be seen on a tour. There's free parking at the site entrance (only Q Station vehicles can drive onto the property), a complimentary Q Station shuttle from Manly Wharf, and the 161 bus between Manly and North Head.
- Ghost tours: to really experience the supernatural side, book one of Q Station's lantern-lit ghost tours. They run at night and need to be booked in advance, so check current tour times.
- Stay the night: if you're brave enough, you can stay overnight in the heritage accommodation. Just don't be surprised if your door opens on its own in the middle of the night.
Graves lie in the bushland here. Respect the dead and Gayamaygal Country, stay on the paths, and only go inside buildings with a tour.
