Nowra Hinterland Yowie Sightings: Cambewarra Mountain Stories
Behind the coastal plain at Nowra, the land rises into the escarpment ridges and gullies of Cambewarra Mountain and the Kangaroo Valley ranges. Over the years, bushwalkers, farmers and campers have described deep howls, distant wood-knocks and heavy breathing drifting across the ridges at midnight. Most get put down to owls or foxes, until something moves too deliberately for either.

The easiest place to take it all in is Cambewarra Lookout, with big views over the Shoalhaven by day and dark, folded ridges by night. We cover the hinterland's reported encounters in our Supernatural Sydney guide.

The History of Yowie Reports in the Nowra Hinterland
The Nowra hinterland is transition country: coastal forest giving way to sandstone escarpments, dry ridges and moist gullies running down toward the Shoalhaven River and its tributaries. Fire trails cross the lower slopes, but beyond them it gets thick and remote, and few people go there after dark. Mist and valley inversions are common, so calls carry further than you'd expect. Locals say it's close to town but still somehow apart.
The Yowie Sightings
In 2003, two walkers camping near Cambewarra Creek reported waking around midnight to a long, rising roar that lasted about 30 seconds, seeming to move across the valley as it built and faded. In the morning, they said, there were no tracks, only disturbed leaf litter and scattered sticks.
In 2010, a solo bushwalker returning late on a marked forestry trail described slow, heavy footsteps paralleling him 50 to 70 metres off the path. They stopped when he stopped and started when he moved, always just out of sight, until a grunt came from behind thick scrub and then silence.
In 2017, several motorists on the winding roads over Cambewarra Mountain reported two raps on their car's body while driving through fog. When they stopped, they described faint amber eyeshine in the trees and a smell "like wet fur and earth".
The pattern is consistent: a howl or knock, then footsteps, then nothing. Locals, it seems, don't share these stories widely.
How to Get to the Nowra Hinterland
From Nowra, head north-west toward Cambewarra and Kangaroo Valley. Cambewarra Lookout sits up on Cambewarra Mountain, off the road between Nowra and Kangaroo Valley, with views over the Shoalhaven. Parts of the surrounding Cambewarra Range Nature Reserve are managed by NPWS. Forestry roads and logging spurs in the area are often unsealed and may close after rain, so check with Shoalhaven City Council, NPWS or Forestry Corporation before heading off the bitumen.
Know Before You Go
- Stay on public roads, the lookout and marked tracks. Much of the hinterland is private farmland, so don't enter paddocks or private tracks.
- The road over Cambewarra Mountain is steep and winding and often foggy. Only stop in the lookout car park or safe pull-offs.
- Respect Aboriginal Country, local farms and residents. Leave no trace in the bush.
- Don't walk unfamiliar trails after dark. Tell someone your plans and carry water and a torch.
- Keep it quiet: no calling, playback or spotlighting into the bush.
