Stock Exchange Arcade: A documentary record of Queensland's gold rush economy
Constructed in 1888 during the peak of the North Queensland gold rush, the Stock Exchange Arcade in Charters Towers serves as a physical record of the region's immense late-19th-century wealth. Originally built by businessman Alexander Malcolm as the Royal Arcade, the building was adapted to house the Charters Towers Stock Exchange in 1890. At the time, the city was the second largest in Queensland, and this facility operated as one of Australia's few regional exchanges, directly connecting the inland mining centre to global financial markets via telegraph.
Architectural design and adaptation
Designed by Sydney architect Mark Day, the arcade is a rare surviving example of late 19th-century commercial arcade architecture in Queensland. Built to withstand the harsh northern climate, the structure features a barrel-vaulted glass roof, tessellated flooring, and a unique subterranean ventilation system that drew fresh air up through the internal walls. The building remains incomplete at its rear—a permanent physical reminder of the sudden economic insolvencies that often characterised the volatile gold boom. Today, the surviving wrought iron and masonry offer an unvarnished look at the civic engineering that supported the mining industry.
Accessing the arcade
The arcade is located on Mosman Street in the centre of Charters Towers, approximately 130 kilometres inland from Townsville. The site is currently managed by the National Trust of Australia (Queensland) and is open to the public. Visitors can walk through the central arcade and view the original Assayer's office at the rear, complete with its historic furnace. It is an essential stop for anyone documenting the commercial infrastructure that drove Queensland's early resource extraction.
