Winifred Falls – Scenic Waterfall Walk in Royal National Park
Winifred Falls – A Hidden Waterfall Near Sydney
Tucked deep within Royal National Park, Winifred Falls is a picturesque cascade that drops into a wide, natural swimming hole. Surrounded by eucalypt forest and sandstone cliffs, it’s a popular spot for hikers looking for a rewarding bushwalk that ends at the water.
If you’re planning to explore more hidden waterfalls and swimming holes, you’ll find detailed maps and directions in my book Swim New South Wales.
Winifred Falls Track – The Walk to the Waterfall
The Winifred Falls track starts from Warumbul Road and winds through classic Australian bushland before descending steeply to the falls. It’s about 1.5 km each way, making it a relatively short but challenging walk.
The Winifred Falls trail is uneven and rocky in parts, so sturdy shoes are recommended. After rain, sections of the path can be muddy, but the extra water flow makes the waterfall especially beautiful.
Swimming at Winifred Falls
At the base of the falls is a natural pool that’s perfect for cooling off after the walk. In summer, the water often clears to a refreshing blue-green, while after heavy rain it can become darker and more powerful.
Because it’s a wild swimming spot, there are no lifeguards or facilities. Take care on the slippery rocks and avoid swimming during flood conditions.
South West Arm Pool – Just Downstream
Just downstream from Winifred Falls lies another gem — the South West Arm Pool. This calm stretch of the creek is framed by bushland and is ideal for a peaceful swim or picnic spot. Many walkers continue past the falls to reach the pool, making it a great way to extend your day out.
I’ll be creating a dedicated guide to South West Arm Pool soon — keep an eye out so you can link both spots together for a full day’s adventure.
