Kutti Beach, Vaucluse: How to Find Sydney's Tiny Harbour Cove

Kutti Beach is a tiny public cove on the harbour side of Vaucluse, between Parsley Bay and Watsons Bay. It's a short strip of pale sand backed by old timber boathouses, with yachts swinging on their moorings just offshore. The water is usually flat and clear, and the only way down is a steep set of public stairs beside a sailing club, so it rarely feels busy.

It's one of the quietest harbour swims in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, and one of our favourite little finds in Swim New South Wales. Come at low tide, bring everything you need, and treat it like the small residential pocket it is.

Swimming at Kutti Beach

Because the cove sits well inside Sydney Harbour, there's no surf to speak of. On most days the water is calm and glassy over a sandy bottom, which makes it good for a slow float, a paddle in the shallows or a lazy swim out towards the moored boats (keep a healthy distance from them).

The catch is the tide. The beach is narrow to begin with, and at high tide it can shrink to a thin sliver of sand with barely room for a towel. Check a tide chart and aim for the hours around low tide, ideally on a weekday morning when the stairs and the sand are at their quietest.

The shallows are a nursery for small fish, and with no bins or facilities on the beach, everything you bring has to leave with you. Put sunscreen on well before you get in, and remember there are no lifeguards here.

How to Get to Kutti Beach

Kutti Beach is at the bottom of Wharf Road in Vaucluse, off Hopetoun Avenue (reached from New South Head Road heading towards Watsons Bay). Wharf Road is a narrow, winding residential street with very little parking, so you'll usually need to park legally further up on The Crescent or Hopetoun Avenue and walk down. At the end of Wharf Road, the public stairs run down beside the Vaucluse Amateur 12ft Sailing Club. They're steep and narrow, so take your time. Use only these public stairs; the boathouses and their slipways are private.

Know Before You Go

  • Public beach, private surrounds: the sand is public, but the boathouses, jetties and slipways around it are not. Keep off them and keep noise down for the residents.
  • No dogs: Woollahra Council lists Kutti Beach as a place where dogs are prohibited, even on a lead.
  • Tide: go near low tide; at high tide there's very little beach left.
  • No facilities: no toilets, bins, shade or kiosk. Bring water and shade and pack out all rubbish. The nearest amenities are at Watsons Bay.
  • Unpatrolled: no lifeguards. Watch for boats coming and going from the sailing club.
  • Water quality: like all harbour beaches, avoid swimming for at least a day or two after heavy rain and check Beachwatch before you go.
  • Parking: limits are enforced and the streets are tight; park legally and don't block driveways.
