Balmoral Baths, Mosman: Netted Harbour Swimming on Balmoral Beach
Balmoral Baths is a netted swimming enclosure on Balmoral Beach in Mosman, framed by a U-shaped timber boardwalk that runs out from the sand and wraps around a big patch of calm harbour water. Unlike a concrete rock pool, it's soft sand underfoot and Sydney Harbour all around.

Because Balmoral faces into the harbour rather than the open ocean, the water is usually flat, and the net gives nervous swimmers extra peace of mind. Add a long grassy foreshore and cafés a few steps away, and it's one of the easiest family harbour days in Swim New South Wales.

Swimming at Balmoral Baths
You walk straight off the sand into the enclosure, and the sandy bottom deepens gradually towards the outer net. That makes it good for wading with kids close to shore and for swimming easy laps along the boardwalk further out. The boardwalk is a great place to lay a towel and look out through the headlands to the Pacific.
The tide makes a big difference to depth, especially near the boardwalk, so don't jump or dive in. Ease in from the sand or the steps instead.
Just outside the net, seagrass beds are a nursery for juvenile fish and home to the endangered White's seahorse. In June 2024, the Sydney Institute of Marine Science released more than 200 captive-bred White's seahorses at Balmoral as part of efforts to rebuild the harbour population. Keep wrappers and rubbish well away from the water and put sunscreen on well before you swim.

How to Get to Balmoral Baths
The baths are at the southern end of Balmoral Beach on The Esplanade, Mosman.
- By car: drive to Mosman and take the steep descent down Awaba Street or Mandolong Road to The Esplanade. There's a council pay-and-display car park at the southern end near the baths and ticketed street parking along the beach.
- Parking: Mosman Council rates apply and can be expensive, and spaces are hard to find on warm weekends. Check the meters.
- By bus: several routes run from the city and North Sydney down to the beach.
Access from The Esplanade onto the sand and boardwalk is flat and step-free. Toilets, change rooms, outdoor showers and plenty of cafés are right on the beach.
Know Before You Go
- Free to swim. Mosman Council lifeguards patrol the beach in the summer months; check conditions before you get in.
- No jumping or diving from the boardwalk: depth changes a lot with the tide.
- The timber boardwalk gets slippery when wet.
- Avoid swimming for up to 48 hours after heavy rain and check Beachwatch.
- Parts of the baths and jetty can close during council maintenance; look for signage on site.
- Protect the seagrass and seahorse habitat: no rubbish or wrappers near the water.
